As the packets are delayed, TCP will then slow down the transfer rate with a smaller window size, which further limits the number of unacknowledged packets allowed. TCP algorithm is proved to be effective when data transfer occurs over a short distance while the network is not congested. However, when the round trip time of packet transfer is inevitably increased by distance, both the performance and efficiency shall be affected.
